Tree Loppers

Tree Loppers are an essential tool for gardeners to trim overgrown branches and clear away dead wood. They can also be used to modify a trees shape, to train growth in a certain direction or to thin the canopy so more light can reach the ground and encourage new growth. Often a pair of loppers will be used in combination with a saw to achieve the final cut on thicker stems. The best pair of loppers will be comfortable to use, with a grip that is soft on the hands and with enough flex in the handle to absorb the impact of each cut without leaving a hard jolt travelling up the arms. The handles can be made of wood, tubular aluminium or plastic, but the best pairs will have a mechanism to maximise leverage for heavy-duty cutting. Power-Lever and ratchet designs are the most effective, multiplying your strength with every squeeze for easier cuts with less strain on the hands and arms.

A tree lopper is a person who cuts down entire trees or large sections of a tree, usually for financial gain. They are unqualified, non-certified and have a very short-term approach to cutting, with little consideration for the overall health and wellbeing of the plant they’re working on. This type of work is incredibly dangerous and should only be carried out by a qualified Arborist.

An Arborist has extensive training and is able to assess the health of a tree, diagnosing issues such as pests and structural weaknesses and developing tailored plans to preserve or restore the tree’s vitality. Arborists can also provide tree removal services, pruning and thinning, and are commonly called upon to deal with storm damage.

When a tree is overgrown it can pose serious risks to people and property, causing accidents or blocking roads and sightlines. A skilled Arborist can safely remove these branches while preserving the tree and its surrounding landscape.

This stylishly designed pair of loppers from Niwaki have beautiful carbon steel blades with solid oak handles and are suitable for branches up to 25mm in diameter. They are a delight to use, with a smooth, precise cutting action and a shallow curved head which makes them ideal for pruning shrubs, grasses and topiary. They are lightweight but sturdy and come in a cloth bag for storage. They are more expensive than other loppers on our list but they’re worth the extra cost for the excellent craftsmanship and comfort they offer. They come with a two year warranty.
